Q: Why did you switch from exclusively using GIF files to using mostly JPEG files
on your web pages?
A: For several reasons. Normally when you load a JPEG file from your harddrive to
an image viewer of some sort, the JPEG takes longer to open than the GIF because the JPEG
format uses a more sophisticated compression scheme than the GIF thereby requiring more
processing power and time. HOWEVER, when loading a JPEG to a web page via even the
fastest modem connection your processor can decompress the file in real time far faster
that the connection can deliver data. Combining that with the tremendous file size
savings you get by using JPEGs means a 40% faster load time for graphic-intensive pages,
and a significant disk space savings on my remote server with only a slight loss in image
quality.
Q: The guitarists you have featured (on your 'Musicians that Shred' page) are very
good, but where is guitar great Yngwie Malmsteen? Surely you have heard of him. Just
wondering, Brett. (from AOL on 12/27/95)
A: My 'Musicians That Shred' page features players who are among my favorites. My
not including someone does not mean that they are no good, or that I do not like them. It
merely means that they are perhaps not my favorite players ever, or that I simply haven't
gotten around to adding them yet. The players on the page change, and others are added in
time. Check back for more stuff. Audio samples change too (when I have the
time!).
Q: Why is there a link to DAVE'S page from your links page?
A: I don't know...
Q: Would Jamie Lee Curtis in a WONDER BRA (tm) be overkill?
A: No, definitely not.
Q: How easy is it to get attributed as a questioner on your FAQ?
m@ (from Matt at utexas.edu on 10/27/96)
A: Not very! :-)
Q: Why is the FAQ so short?
A: Because I just thought of this and haven't been asked many questions yet. Feel
free to ask.
